Mazda MX-5: renewing a legend

|

Mazda has unveiled the fourth generation of its MX-5 roadster. Of this model which is celebrating its 25th birthday this year, we were finally able to discover its shape as a whole, but not the technical characteristics. The Japanese manufacturer defends itself by explaining that the information will be delivered at the start of October at the opening of the Paris Motor Show. We must be patient then...

That said, the discovery of the model leaves you speechless. The roadster has – it’s true – a sharper style. The MX-5 favours angles and is quite loyal to the Kodo style dear to the other models of the current range. Concerning the size, going from one generation to the other, it’s lost 10 cm in length but has gained 1 cm in width. The MX-5 thus looks more compact. Gossipers would say that the front is inspired by the Honda S2000 and the rear evokes Jaguar’s F-Type roadster. I’ll let you be the judge... the interior, for its part, is quite bare and takes over the sober ambiance of the multipurpose 3.

Concerning the insides of the MX-5, we already know that the engine is still front and centre, that it is still rear-wheel drive, that the centre of gravity is a bit lower and that the entry level of the range weighs less than a ton. To run it, several sources think that the roadster MX-5 will inherit the 2-litre SkyActiv petrol engine: a four-cylinder which is available at two levels of power (120 or 165 horsepower) and notably runs the Mazda 3. Wait and see...

In your opinion, do they have another success on the cards?
