The RS version of the current Audi A3 is now in development. Several unofficial photos confirm that preparations are going strong. In the past few weeks, the trade press has gathered some precious information about this thoroughbred sports car … The most recent pertains to the heart of the beast: its engine. According to various sources, the Ingolstadt-based carmaker is trading in the 340-hp 2.5-litre engine from the previous generation for an extremely powerful four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The four-cylinder block appears to be the same as the one in the concept cars recently unveiled in Geneva and Beijing. These include the Audi TT Quattro Sport Concept and Volkswagen Golf R 400.
Under the hood, you’ll find a dual-injection petrol 2.0 TFSI engine, with a forged-steel crankshaft, a high-resistance cast-alloy cylinder block and an extensively modified cylinder head. According to studies, these changes will make it possible to get no less than 420 horsepower from this two-litre engine! The trade press, for its part, estimates that the new RS3 could generate about 400 horsepower , which is the same level as for the Golf R 400 concept car.
For this version of the RS, it’s a safe bet that engineers will make the beast lighter and develop a four-wheel drive with greatly increased responsiveness. All of this should promise some fun rides for track enthusiasts. This Audi RS3 is scheduled for release in the spring of 2015. So have a little patience!
