Electric cars do not yet represent the majority of the Belgian car fleet, but they are becoming more and more popular. When you think of electric cars, you automatically think of the American company Tesla, which only sells electric cars, or the futuristic city cars of Renault and Nissan, among others. In recent years, the range of electric cars has expanded considerably and most brands can offer an electric option.
In the future, this range will only expand. 2025 and 2030 are two milestone dates. U.S. automaker Ford will begin investing more in electric models in 2025, with the goal of reducing the number of combustion engine cars to 60 percent worldwide by 2030. Volvo and Fiat are even more ambitious and want to build only electrically powered cars from 2030.
The benefits of electric cars
Why are electric cars such a hot topic? The big advantage of electric driving is its environmental impact, which is less than that of combustion engines. This is because electric cars do not emit any pollutants. Noise pollution is also a thing of the past. Although this can also be considered a disadvantage. Since electric cars are very quiet, you don't hear them coming, which can lead to dangerous situations.
There are also financial advantages to driving electric. The purchase price may be a little higher than a traditional car, but this difference is offset by the low price of electricity compared to diesel and gasoline, lower maintenance costs, and the tax advantage. The residual value of a used electric car should be better.
The playing field has improved considerably in recent years. Some electric cars have a range of 400 to 500 km and with a fast charger you can charge your car in 30 minutes. That's still much longer than pouring gasoline or diesel into the tank. So there is still work to be done.
