The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL (W113). A true pilgrimage destination for convertible enthusiasts.

In the early 1960s, Mercedes-Benz director Walter Hitzinger was searching for the perfect middle ground between the legendary 300 SL Gullwing — which was not exactly comfortable — and the 190 SL, which had more style than performance. In 1963, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W113, soon nicknamed the “Pagoda” thanks to the distinctive shape of its removable hardtop roof. Nearly 60 years later, it has become an undisputed cult classic — and we fully understand why.

The chassis was based on a shortened version of the W111 S-Class platform, powered by the M180 inline six-cylinder engine, itself derived from Mercedes-Benz aviation engineering principles. A long bonnet, large Bakelite steering wheel, rear-wheel drive… do we really need to say more?

Ours? A beautifully presented example finished in grey-blue metallic with a beige leather interior, enjoying Dutch roads for the past 25 years. It comes equipped with air conditioning, a Becker radio, a tracking system, cruise control, and a stainless-steel exhaust system from front to rear. Always maintained in the Netherlands by a renowned Mercedes-Benz specialist, who has given this example their full approval for its next adventure.
