Description
Presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1973, the 308 GT4 occupies a very special place in Ferrari's history. It marked a true break with the models that preceded it: it was the first production Ferrari to adopt a mid-rear-mounted V8 engine, an architecture that would later become one of Maranello's signatures for several decades.
The GT4 is also a stylistic exception. Ferrari bypassed Pininfarina here, entrusting the design to Bertone and Marcello Gandini, the creator of some of the most iconic Italian silhouettes of that era. With its taut, angular lines typical of the 1970s, the GT4 contrasts sharply with the curves of the Dino 246 it replaced.
It was initially marketed under the name Dino 308 GT4, before becoming fully integrated into the Ferrari range from 1976. Its 2+2 architecture is another distinctive feature: despite its mid-engine layout, the 2.55 m wheelbase allows for two small rear seats and makes the car considerably more versatile than a strict two-seater berlinetta.
At the heart of the 308 GT4 lies Ferrari's famous 2,926 cc 90° V8 engine, mounted transversely and fed by four twin-choke Weber carburetors. In its European version, Ferrari claimed 255 hp at 7,700 rpm and a top speed of 250 km/h. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
Production of the 308 GT4 ended in 1980 after only 2,826 units, before its replacement by the Mondial 8. Long overshadowed by the 308 GTB and GTS, the GT4 is now being rediscovered for what it truly represents: a historically important Ferrari, with a design by Gandini, equipped with a carbureted V8 and produced in relatively limited numbers.
The example we are offering has a particularly interesting and well-documented history. It is chassis number F106AL13446, corresponding to a 1976 308 GT4.
Its color combination is particularly elegant and quintessentially seventies: an Argento body with a black lower section, paired with a blue leather interior. A significantly more original configuration than the traditional Rosso Corsa, and one that suits the angular lines designed by Gandini particularly well.
The car reappeared in Germany in 2016, registered to an owner based in Bad Essen. An FSP/TÜV inspection was carried out on April 27, 2016, and the German documents confirmed the car as a Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, with chassis number F106AL13446.
The car then arrived in France. During a check carried out in Saint-Laurent-du-Var on October 12, 2016, its odometer read 52,401 km.
A few days later, on October 30, 2016, this same 308 GT4 was offered in Paris at the Artcurial "Automobiles sur les Champs" auction. Its grey/black and blue leather interior was already highlighted in the car's presentation. It sold for €41,720.
Major mechanical work was then carried out in December 2016 at Monza / Garage Francorchamps. The invoice in the file specifically mentions the replacement of the two timing belts, the timing belt bearings/tensioners, the water pump gasket, an auxiliary belt and the oil filter.
On February 7, 2017, the Ferrari was acquired by its last owner, who would keep it for almost ten years.
Used very sparingly since then, it now shows only 52,519 km on the odometer. The reading of 52,401 km taken in October 2016 therefore confirms the very low mileage covered in recent years.
Despite its low mileage, maintenance has not been neglected: in August 2024, a major service was carried out, including the replacement of the timing belts. This is a crucial aspect of this Ferrari V8 and a real advantage for its future owner.
This 308 GT4 thus brings together many arguments: a rare and particularly successful color combination, a known history in its recent period, nearly ten years in the hands of its last owner, very little mileage change and a timing belt replacement in 2024.
With its naturally aspirated V8 with four Weber carburetors, its five-speed manual gearbox, its Bertone design by Marcello Gandini and only 2,826 examples produced, the 308 GT4 is a Ferrari in its own right – and above all a Ferrari that played a major role in the history of the brand by inaugurating the mid-engine V8 architecture that would give birth to a whole line of mythical models.
