Description
Building the fourth-generation F-Series was a somewhat eventful experience for the Blue Oval, which was forced to make several design changes over the truck's five-year production run from 1961 to 1966. Right off the bat, the fourth-generation F-Series came across as a bit of an odd-looking vehicle, sitting closer to the road than the previous generation. Ford also decided to weld the cab and body together initially, eliminating the gap between the cab and bed. This decision was short-lived, as the automaker returned to a separate cab and bed design in 1964.
For the 1965 and '66 models, Ford introduced an all-new F-series chassis, although the overall body design remained the same – except for the repositioned turn signals, now placed above the headlights.
They are also the first F-Series trucks to offer more than 200 horsepower, thanks to a 352 ci V-8 engine.
In the late 1950s and 1960s, the pickup became increasingly "civilized." Along with softer suspensions and other amenities, the focus was on sprucing up the cab with nicer upholstery, door trim, padded dashboards, fancy steering wheels, etc., but no one had yet taken the plunge and installed real "bucket" seats. Perhaps inspired by the success of the Mustang, Ford offered a cab package option for the Ranger in 1965 that included bucket seats, straight out of the Mustang. The Ranger package had to be ordered in addition to the Custom Cab option. It included both the buckets and a cover behind them designed to hide the old-school gas tank in the cab. The console, taken from a 1963 Falcon Sprint or Comet S-22, was an additional option.
This example is a 352ci V8 Custom Cab equipped with the rare Ranger package and a 3-speed manual transmission. It has been restored, but we do not have a file. It runs perfectly.
