Description
The Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato 1300 S Series 2 appeared in 1970, at a time when Lancia wanted to streamline production of the Fulvia Sport while preserving the originality of the version designed by Ercole Spada for the Milanese coachbuilder Zagato. Since its introduction in 1965, the Fulvia Sport had represented the most daring variant of the Fulvia range, with a highly streamlined fastback silhouette that contrasted sharply with the coupé designed by Piero Castagnero. The Series 2 retained this distinctive line but received several modifications aimed at improving interior space and simplifying manufacturing.
The most significant transformation concerns the body construction. While the early Fulvia Sport models made extensive use of aluminum, the Series 2 adopts an all-steel body, allowing for more consistent production and greater durability. The roofline is slightly raised to improve interior space, while the rear fenders are redesigned and the taillights become horizontal, giving the car an instantly recognizable visual signature. The overall design remains true to the Zagato spirit: a compact, highly aerodynamic car with a strong stylistic personality.
The mechanics still rely on the sophisticated technical architecture for which the Fulvia is renowned. Under the hood sits the famous Lancia V4 engine with its very narrow angle of approximately 12°, designed by engineer Antonio Fessia. This 1,298 cc engine, equipped with twin overhead camshafts and fed by Solex carburetors, develops around 90 hp in the 1300 S version. Combined with a five-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, it offers lively and precise handling, supported by a particularly well-balanced chassis and four-wheel disc brakes, still remarkable in this class in the early 1970s.
The Fulvia Sport also retains several original technical details, such as its laterally hinged engine hood facilitating access to the mechanics and its rear hatch, a solution still rare on a sports car of this era, which allows access to a loading space and improves the ventilation of the passenger compartment.
Produced until 1973, the Fulvia Sport Zagato 1300 S Series 2 represents the last evolution of this collaboration between Lancia and Zagato and is today one of the most usable and accomplished versions of the Fulvia Sport.
The car presented here is a 1973 Fulvia Sport Zagato 1.3 S Series 2, originally delivered new in Italy. It is in perfect mechanical and bodywork condition, with no corrosion. Meticulously maintained, it comes with extensive service records and a restoration file. It is now ready to drive.
