Description
The Mercedes 300 SEL 3.5 was launched in the late 1960s, at a time when the three-pointed star brand was seeking to expand its offerings into the premium segment by combining luxury, comfort, and more modern engines. Introduced in 1969, it belongs to the W109 generation, the long-wheelbase and luxurious version of the W108 series. The distinguishing feature of this version was its 3.5-liter V8 engine, a lightweight alloy block that produced approximately 200 horsepower. This was a significant development, as until then, large Mercedes sedans had relied on inline six-cylinder engines, which were smoother but less powerful.
The 300 SEL 3.5 brought a new dimension to the range, combining refined interiors, with high-quality wood trim and leather, with performance that allowed it to compete with other prestigious European sedans. It easily reached 200 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 9 seconds, making it a fast and reliable grand tourer. The air suspension, already familiar from the 300 SEL 6.3, remained a key feature for comfort and handling.
It remained in production until 1972, before being replaced by the new W116 generation, the first to officially bear the "S-Class" designation. Today, the 300 SEL 3.5 holds a special place in Mercedes history: it embodies the transition to the modern era of compact and powerful V8 engines, in a format that still retained the classic elegance of 1960s sedans. It is a model prized by enthusiasts for its balance between classicism and innovation.
The example shown, registered on May 9, 1972, was produced for the French market and delivered in "metallic sand beige" with a "tobacco brown" roof, while the upholstery is brown cloth. It features desirable options such as air conditioning and heat-insulating glass. In original condition, it was previously repainted and has recently undergone restoration.

Recent work:
- Complete engine and gearbox service
- Undercarriage refurbishment and wheel alignment
- 4 new Michelin XWX tires
- Air suspension overhaul
- Replacement of pneumatic and hydraulic lines
- Oil cooler replacement
- Exhaust system repair
- Air conditioning service and recharge
The car is in excellent condition, both aesthetically and mechanically. It has the original owner's manuals and invoices for recent work. The air conditioning works.
Historically, the mileage in 2016 was 21,959 km and 22,036 km in 2023. In 2024, the odometer was reset and it now reads 793 km. It would therefore have approximately 123,000 km today, which is consistent with its condition, both inside and out.
