Description

The Morgan Plus 8 was born in 1968 , initially almost as an "experiment": Morgan decided to install the brand new 3.5-litre Rover V8, made of aluminium, under the long bonnet of its Plus 4. The result was dazzling: a featherweight of around 900 kg and a power of around 160 horsepower. The car retained the narrow chassis of the Plus 4 and its sliding front suspension dating from 1910. It was rustic, but very fast, with lively handling.

In 1969 , the car was still virtually identical to its 1968 counterpart. The changes were minor: some minor improvements to the cooling and brakes, but no major changes. It remained a high-powered Plus 4, with pre-war styling but contemporary sports car performance.

In 1970 , Morgan began to make the whole thing a little more reliable. The dashboard was revised, with new switches and instruments. The Moss gearbox remained unchanged, but the mechanical assembly became more robust. The first modifications to the chassis appeared, very slight, to support the torque of the V8.

In 1971 , some equipment changes were made: slightly redesigned seats, improved heating and hood sealing, but still no major structural changes. The Plus 8 retained its narrow track and thin wire wheels.

Then came 1972 , which marked the full maturity of this narrow first generation. The Rover 3.5-litre V8 engine with SU carburettors developed around 155 horsepower, and the car remained under 900 kg. The four-speed Moss gearbox remained. This 1972 version is often considered the pinnacle of the 'original' Plus 8: lively, raw, extremely light, with the artisanal charm of the early series and an intact style inherited from the Plus 4.

In 1973 , the Plus 8 continued almost unchanged, but received some discreet improvements to the brakes and running gear. The aesthetics remained the same, still with the slim body and the curved wings tightly around the wheels.

In 1974 and 1975 , Morgan began preparing for a wider chassis, as modern, wider tires required more space and stability. Some reinforcements were added and some models already received slightly wider wheels, but the overall silhouette remained the same.

This example was delivered new in Germany on February 14, 1973 and has since covered just over 81,000 km. It is therefore a rare left-hand drive version with metric instrumentation. It is in very good condition and has benefited from an engine preparation increasing its power to +/- 170 hp. It comes with a soft top, side windows and a tonneau cover.

The car drives very well, the engine is torquey and powerful and the running gear is in very good condition.
