Description
The Volkswagen Beetle, officially the Type 1, is one of the most iconic automobiles of the 20th century. Designed in the 1930s by Ferdinand Porsche as a "people's car," it adopted a simple and ingenious architecture: a rear-mounted, air-cooled, flat-four engine, rear-wheel drive, and a robust construction that facilitated maintenance. After World War II, production restarted in Wolfsburg, and the Beetle quickly became a global phenomenon. Its mechanical simplicity, reliability, and low running costs explain its exceptional success, with over 21 million units produced in total.
The early 1970s saw the arrival of the so-called “Super Beetle” generation, with the 1302 and then the 1303 models. Introduced in 1972, the 1303 was distinguished by its highly curved windshield, a modernized dashboard, and larger taillights. Most notably, it adopted a MacPherson strut front suspension, replacing the torsion bar front suspension of the classic Beetles. This evolution significantly improved handling, steering precision, and comfort, while retaining the traditional rear-engine layout. Although European production ceased in the mid-1970s, the Beetle continued its run in other countries, particularly Mexico, where it continued to evolve technically.
The example shown is a 1982 Beetle 1303. Originally, it was equipped with a 1400cc fuel-injected engine, typical of the later Beetle models produced outside Europe. It is now fitted with a 1600cc engine, the most well-known of Volkswagen's boxer engines. This air-cooled, flat-four engine develops approximately 50 hp at 4,000 rpm, with a torque of around 106 Nm, fed by a carburetor and paired with a four-speed manual transmission. This engine is renowned for its robustness, ease of maintenance, and the wide availability of parts, making it one of the most popular engines among Beetle enthusiasts.
This car underwent a complete restoration in 2000, during which all the mechanical components, bodywork, and interior were overhauled. More than twenty years after this restoration, it now shows signs of wear, normal for a car used since its restoration, but overall it remains sound and coherent. It is equipped with electronic ignition and a new carburetor. The gearbox was recently rebuilt (shift forks, gears, bearings).
It bears witness to a significant restoration effort where everything had been redone, and today constitutes an endearing Beetle at an attractive price.
