Description
Presented here is a 1958 Volkswagen Beetle Deluxe Sedan convertible, one of the most sought-after versions of the famous Type 1. Equipped with its original large canvas sunroof, it offers the driving pleasure of a convertible while retaining the rigidity and practicality of a sedan. This configuration, produced in limited numbers compared to the standard sedans, is now particularly prized by collectors.
The 1958 model year marked a significant milestone in the Beetle's evolution. It was the first year to feature the large rear window , which greatly improved visibility and modernized the car's lines. At the same time, it retained the elegant retractable arrow indicators (semaphores) integrated into the door pillars, an iconic feature of early European Beetles. This unique combination makes the 1958 model a highly sought-after transitional version among classic Volkswagen enthusiasts.
Since its launch after World War II, the Volkswagen Beetle has established itself as one of the most iconic cars of all time. Designed around a simple, robust, and economical engine, it has accompanied several generations of drivers and has been produced in over 21 million units. Its timeless design, virtually unchanged for decades, has made it a true icon of automotive history.
This Beetle was acquired by its current owner in 2004. It subsequently underwent a complete restoration, carried out with the aim of preserving the spirit of the model while improving its reliability and driving experience. The bodywork was performed by a Volkswagen specialist and completed in 2018, the year it was returned to the road.
The bodywork is presented in its magnificent Agave Green hue, applied in direct gloss paint in accordance with period finishes. The chrome elements have been completely re-chromed by a specialist, and the interior has been entirely refurbished by a professional upholsterer, faithfully recreating the original ambiance.
Mechanically, the car has been extensively refurbished. The electrical system has been completely rebuilt with a 12-volt conversion, as has the braking system. To improve safety and handling without altering the car's character, it has been fitted with front disc brakes , a stabilizer bar , adjustable front suspension , and a removable rear valance , facilitating mechanical work.
The engine is a 1,776 cc flat-four , completely rebuilt in 2017 and producing approximately 90 hp , paired with the original gearbox . This modification offers significantly improved performance compared to the original engine while retaining the Beetle's unique character and feel.
The car comes with its Volkswagen certificate of origin , its administrative documents, and an extensive restoration file including various invoices.
Carefully restored and benefiting from discreet but judicious mechanical improvements, this Beetle represents a rare opportunity to acquire a particularly attractive example of the first model year with a large rear window, combining the authenticity of a 1950s icon with the pleasure of modern use.
