Description

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia officially appeared in 1955. It was the result of a unique collaboration between Volkswagen, which provided the proven mechanical platform of the Beetle, Karmann, responsible for manufacturing and assembling the bodies, and Ghia, in charge of the design. The result was an elegant, low-slung, and sensual car, designed to appeal to customers seeking aesthetics without compromising Volkswagen reliability.

Technically, the Karmann Ghia adopted the Beetle's architecture, featuring a rear-mounted, air-cooled boxer engine and a simple yet robust chassis. It wasn't a sports car in the strictest sense, but rather a comfortable and easy-to-live-with coupé (and later a convertible). From its inception, it was distinguished by its almost handcrafted bodywork, which explains its higher production costs and lower production volumes compared to other VW models.

The early years, between 1955 and 1959, saw the introduction of the so-called "lowlight" models, recognizable by their low-set headlights. The 1960s witnessed a gradual evolution with slightly more powerful engines, improved interior finish, and more modern equipment. From the late 1960s until production ceased in 1974, the Karmann Ghia entered its final phase, marked by adaptations to safety standards and a more contemporary design. In total, approximately 445,000 units were produced, a relatively modest figure for Volkswagen.

This example was delivered new in Germany in February 1972. This year marks one of the very last European iterations of the Karmann Ghia. By this point, the model had reached a certain level of technical maturity while retaining most of its original charm. Under the rear hood is the Type 1 1600 cc engine, producing approximately 50 DIN horsepower. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, it allows for smooth and relaxed driving, with a top speed of around 145 km/h. Performance isn't spectacular, but reliability and ease of maintenance are part of the model's DNA.

Aesthetically, the 1972 Karmann Ghia adopted the large rectangular taillights introduced in the early 1970s, which significantly modernized the rear end. The bumpers were thicker than in previous decades to meet safety requirements, but the European versions remained considerably slimmer than those destined for the American market. The overall silhouette remained harmonious, and many consider this period to be a good balance between classic elegance and modern constraints.

Inside, the ambiance is more functional than luxurious, but significantly more refined than in models from the 1950s or early 1960s. The matte black dashboard reduces glare, the round instruments remain simple and legible, and the seats offer greater comfort on long journeys. The heating system, often criticized in older VWs, is also improved, making the car more pleasant to use in European climates.

The specific features of the 1972 European models are important to collectors. Unlike the American versions, they are not subject to the strictest emissions standards, resulting in simpler and often more reliable mechanics. The lighting, turn signals, and certain finishing details meet European standards, and the driving experience is generally perceived as more "authentic," without the compromises imposed by the North American market.

This example boasts a superb, refurbished interior and well-maintained mechanics. The Willow Green/white exterior color combination is perfect, and the brown interior was highly sought after in the European market at the time.
