Description

The Delage D6 3-liter, bodied by Autobineau, is among the most elegant examples of pre-war French automobiles. The D6 line began in the early 1930s, when Louis Delage sought to restore prestige to his brand despite a difficult economic climate. Its inline six-cylinder engine quickly became one of the most refined engines of its time: smooth, quiet, and robustly built, it embodied high-level French mechanical expertise.

The 3-liter version appeared in the late 1930s, a time when Delage entrusted the production of its bodies to Autobineau, a subsidiary of Letourneur et Marchand. Autobineau's creations were distinguished by their elegantly classic lines and perfect proportions, already displaying a subtle aerodynamic influence. The D6 3L coupes and convertibles produced between 1938 and 1940 are among the most beautiful French automobiles of the interwar period.

Under the hood, the 2,984 cc six-cylinder engine develops approximately 90 horsepower, allowing it to reach nearly 140 km/h—respectable performance for a large luxury sedan. The highly rigid chassis, combined with independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes, gives the D6 safe handling and remarkable comfort.

After the war, Delage, now part of Delahaye, briefly continued production of the D6 in modernized forms. But the heroic period—that of the D6 3L Autobineau—already belonged to a bygone golden age. Rare today, these cars symbolize the perfect alliance between technology, art, and craftsmanship: each example, handcrafted, was destined for a clientele of aesthetes for whom the automobile represented far more than a means of transport—a true work of art.

The model presented is a Delage D6 3L equipped with its original six-cylinder engine with three carburetors and a Cotal gearbox. One of the rare examples to feature an Autobineau body, it is distinguished by its generously proportioned, elegant six-window sedan silhouette. The original blue leather upholstery with beige piping testifies to remarkable craftsmanship, as do the wood trim pieces, which are in excellent condition. Among the numerous period features are a sunroof, a radio, a Soliflore light, and a Quillery steering wheel. The car is sound and well-preserved, displaying a beautiful patina that lends it an authentic charm, the result of time and careful use.

According to information gathered, this D6 was purchased new by a hauler from Orléans, before passing into the hands of Mr. Garino, former first deputy mayor of Puteaux. It changed hands again in 2010, and then once more in 2015 when it joined Claude Gratzmuller's collection. The car has a repainted finish with a still attractive sheen, and the original blue leather upholstery, along with replaced carpets, remains in excellent condition. The engine, rebuilt by the previous owner, runs perfectly; the clutch, tires, brakes, starter, and bumper chrome have also been restored.

In addition to its luxurious finish, the car is equipped with a sunroof, a radio, a heater, and a period-correct fire extinguisher. Delivered with its cover, it is among the last Delages produced before the brand ceased operations in 1954. Such a complete and original example, boasting an authentic patina, beautifully illustrates the build quality and refinement for which Delage was renowned.
