Description

The Lancia Beta Montecarlo appeared in the mid-1970s as a very distinctive model within the Lancia range. Despite bearing the name “Beta,” it shared little in common with other models in the family. While the Beta sedans, coupes, and HPE models were front-wheel drive with front engines, the Montecarlo adopted a much sportier architecture: a mid-rear engine and rear-wheel drive. The project originated in the early 1970s at Pininfarina under the codename Fiat X1/8, initially intended to replace the Fiat 124 Coupé. Following the 1973 oil crisis, the idea of a V6 engine was abandoned, and the project evolved into the X1/20, equipped with a two-liter, twin-cam four-cylinder engine derived from the renowned Lampredi engine. Ultimately, Fiat decided to entrust the marketing of the model to Lancia, aiming to offer a more exclusive sports car than the Fiat X1/9.

Presented at the 1975 Geneva Motor Show, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo immediately captivated with its taut, pure lines designed by Paolo Martin at Pininfarina. Compact and low-slung, it adopted the design cues of mid-engined berlinettas of the era, with two seats, a short wheelbase, and independent McPherson strut suspension. Under the rear hood lay the 1995 cc twin-cam Lampredi four-cylinder engine, fed by a Weber carburetor, producing around 120 hp. Combined with a five-speed manual gearbox and a weight of less than a ton, this engine allowed the Montecarlo to reach nearly 190 km/h, while offering very balanced handling, frequently praised by the motoring press.

The first series was produced from 1975 to 1978, in coupé and targa-roofed spider versions. After a hiatus to address a braking issue, the car returned in a second series in 1980, now simply called the Lancia Montecarlo. This evolution was distinguished by some styling tweaks, different wheels, an improved braking system, and a slightly modernized engine with electronic ignition. Total production remained limited, with fewer than 8,000 units assembled by Pininfarina in Grugliasco, contributing to the model's rarity today.

The Montecarlo also played an important role in competition. Its mid-engine design served as the basis for the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo, which won the World Sports Car Championship in the 2-litre category in 1980 and 1981, and directly inspired the development of the famous Lancia Rally 037, future World Rally Champion.

The example shown here is a 2-liter version from 1982, corresponding to the last Montecarlo models produced. It is equipped with the 1995 cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine developing approximately 120 hp, mounted in a mid-rear position and coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox, an architecture that gives this small Italian coupé a dynamic balance and sporty character very typical of European berlinettas of the early 1980s.
