In the fifties, Triumph launched its first sports car, the Triumph TR2. The TR designation – short for Triumph Roadster – was solely used for the British brand’s sports cars.
The TR4 was introduced in 1961. This completely redesigned sports car looked very different from its predecessor – the TR3. The new and larger coachwork with proper wind-down windows (in place of side curtains), increased displacement, a synchronised gearbox and larger boot were just a few of the notable improvements. In later years, the track front and rear were also widened, and the car’s road-holding heightened.
The emphasis for the TR4 clearly shifted to designing a more user-friendly car, with a completely new interior and dashboard, in combination with higher driving dynamics compared with its memorable predecessor. This car did not just look more modern, it belonged to a new generation.
‘Collection by Vermant’ is pleased to offer you this stunning December 1964 Triumph TR4. The car was supplied as a new car to the dealership of Harold Menzies in San Francisco, California. Options include a tonneau cover, heating, windshield washers, seat belts, a battery box. Until the end of 2016, this sports car was owned by the same American family, after which it crossed the ocean to Belgium. Today this TR4 is still equipped with its ‘Matching Numbers’ 2.2 L four-cylinder engine with 105 rear wheel hp and a four-speed manual gearbox.
The second Belgian owner drove this TR4 for three years, making substantial investments in the car. The entire suspension was revised, the braking system renewed, five new spoke rims added with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, new SU carburettors installed, the original ignition was replaced with an electronic ignition system. The addition of an electric cooling fan tackled a weakness of the TRs, namely their cooling. The car’s bodywork, seals and interior were renovated a few years earlier, in the iconic ‘British Racing Green’ with a pale brown interior.
In 2020 we had the pleasure of selling this TR4 to its third Belgian owner, a passionate older gentleman who used the car sparingly and accumulated around 5.000km on the car during his 5 years of ownership. He really saw the car as his baby using it only on sunny days. However due to his rise in age, he has decided to part ways with his beloved TR4 and sell it back to us.
The Triumph comes with a Heritage trust document, the original invoice, two original ‘Triumph’ keys, American title and several other invoices. It presents a unique opportunity for a true enthousiast to buy a very well sorted and beautifully configured TR4.
